Good day fair commenters of Oppo.
I finally figured out what camper to buy and I’ll be picking it up this weekend. I went with a Forest River No Boundaries 10.6. It’s a mini toy hauler version. It comes with a slide out kitchen in the front, it’s pretty much a horizontal 12v fridge drawer that slides pretty far out. The one I found was very bare bones optioned so it only comes with a normal cooler. I plan on upgrading it with a dual zone 12v horizontal fridge.
My question is, fellow opponauts, do any of you have experience with 12v. refrigerators? Any brand recommendations? I know Dometic is seen as a “gold standard” but if there are any other options out there, I’m open to doing my due diligence . Bonus points if there are horizontal options that are propane/12v/110v too.
Long term, I plan on adding 200w solar panels and dual batteries, but that won’t be this season.

“Bonus points if there are horizontal options that are propane/12v/110v too.”
We lived in a fairly large travel trailer for a couple of years. My mom bought land and was planning on building a house, but we needed something sturdier than a tent to live in before the house was built.
Anyway, the fact that our refrigerator could work on either propane or electricity nearly short-circuited my pre-teen brain. How on earth could fire keep the milk cold ?!!?
Science, my younger

. Science.

House where I lived from ages 4-9 had an old natural- gas-powered chest freezer in the basement, and yeah, it definitely seemed like something that shouldn’t exist, but I guess anything that can power the compressor...

That looks awesome... I think our go kart would fit in there!

I was always fascinated at how frost would form on the outside of the tiny propane cylinders if you used them for grilling on a humid day. Propane is such an efficient refrigerant.

It’s designed for a 4 wheeler, If the kart is under 60 inches tall it should fit too. I never thought of that... now I need to look at go karts too...

That’s a very interesting camper. I had visions of moving into an RV full- time at my last job, since I could work from anywhere, but this is much more appropriate for the limited use I’d get out of one these days.

I’m planning on using it when I start doing Tough Mudders again. I’d have to book hotel rooms before, and it was getting pricey with the number of events I ran (10-12 with two nights a piece). Campsites are much cheaper.

The gas doesn’t run the compressor. It’s powered by chemical reactions driven by heating a solution of ammonia.

Ours is a little too long, I think...

It’s your lucky day!
Meanwhile, I’m over here learning about L-head engines.

Ha!
I’d have to get very creative to make it work.

My camper is bigger and has the regular 3-way fridge that’s built in. It works great when plugged in to regular power, ok on propane, and useless on 12v. It takes several hours to go from room temp to cold when plugged in. Some people will drive with them running on propane but I’m not a fan of the idea. From my understanding the 2-way chest-type run off of a compressor and work better than the 3-way that use “absorption” cooling .
Make sure you get the bathroom situation planned out as well, it’s the best part of having a camper. Being able to take a massive dump and then shower in your own bathroom is a bazillion times better than using campground facilities, or just propping up against a tree.

I’m going with no onboard facilities. Probably get a porta-john or dig my own latrine where I can.

My experience goes back to my childhood when we had a 3 way refrigerator in our Starcraft Galaxy 8.
I recall the fridge being completely useless on 12V, mostly useless on propane (with the flame often going out) and only somewhat useful on 120V.
If I had to guess, it was probably a shitty/cheap ‘absorption’ type fridge.
You want a compressor fridge. They will cost more, but they will be usable.
